After defeating the English King Harold at the Battle of Hastings, William ‘The Conqueror’ invited his rich noblemen over from Northern France to help control his new kingdom. The new landlords brought new French words with them (like 'Money', 'Castle' and 'Royal').
They built a Castle in West Derby and wrote about the wider Liverpool area in their Domesday Book. In a short time the Norman Knights considered themselves truly English and by 1202 they were fighting for England... against the French!
